Prepare Your Vehicle and Tools

Before you start, make sure your vehicle is in a safe spot. Pull over to a flat, stable surface away from traffic. Turn on your hazard lights to alert other drivers. If you have a parking brake, engage it to prevent the car from rolling.

Gather the tools you will need:

  • Spare tire (check that it is properly inflated)

  • Jack

  • Lug wrench

  • Wheel wedges or blocks (to secure the wheels)

  • Gloves (optional but helpful for cleanliness and grip)

  • Flashlight (if it’s dark)

Having these items ready will make the process smoother and safer.

Secure the Vehicle

Place wheel wedges or blocks in front of or behind the tires opposite the flat one. For example, if the front tire is flat, place the wedges behind the rear tires. This step prevents the vehicle from moving while you work.

Double-check that the parking brake is set. If you are on a slope, try to position the car so it faces uphill to reduce the risk of rolling.

Loosen the Lug Nuts

Use the lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts on the flat tire. Turn them counterclockwise, but do not remove them completely yet. Loosening the nuts while the tire is still on the ground prevents the wheel from spinning.

If the lug nuts are very tight, you can use your body weight to push down on the wrench for extra force. Be careful to maintain balance.

Lift the Vehicle with the Jack

Consult your vehicle’s manual to find the correct jack placement points. These are usually reinforced areas near the tires.

Position the jack under the recommended spot and raise the vehicle until the flat tire is about six inches off the ground. Make sure the jack is stable and the car is secure before proceeding.

Remove the Flat Tire

Now fully unscrew the loosened lug nuts and keep them in a safe place. Carefully pull the flat tire straight off the wheel hub. Place it aside where it won’t roll away.

Inspect the wheel hub for any damage or debris before installing the spare.

Mount the Spare Tire

Align the spare tire with the wheel bolts and slide it onto the hub. Push it firmly to ensure it fits snugly.

Screw the lug nuts back on by hand, tightening them as much as possible. This keeps the tire in place while you lower the vehicle.

Lower the Vehicle and Tighten Lug Nuts

Use the jack to slowly lower the vehicle until the spare tire touches the ground but the full weight is not on it yet.

Now use the lug wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star or crisscross pattern. This ensures even pressure and a secure fit. Tighten each nut firmly, but avoid over-tightening which can damage the threads.

Once all nuts are tight, lower the vehicle completely and remove the jack.

Final Checks and Clean Up

Double-check the lug nuts for tightness. Store the flat tire, jack, and tools back in your vehicle.

If your spare tire is a temporary “donut” type, remember it is not designed for long distances or high speeds. Drive carefully and get your regular tire repaired or replaced as soon as possible.

Tips for Changing a Spare Tire Safely

  • Practice changing a tire in a safe environment before you need to do it on the road.

  • Keep your spare tire and tools in good condition and check them regularly.

  • Wear reflective clothing or use a warning triangle if you must change a tire on a busy road.

  • If you feel unsafe or unsure, call roadside assistance.
